Why I love Yoga!

Yoga brought an awareness of my body and appreciation for my anatomy that I never knew was possible.  I've been through many stages with my yoga practice - from feeling really strong and powerful and wanting the most sweaty, challenging, butt-kicking class I could find to healing from injury and appreciating the opportunity to move slow and investigate the changes in my muscles and joints that were happening.

I love that yoga allows each of us to find what we are seeking from it.  I admit that embodying yogic philosophy is a much greater challenge to me than working on my asana.  That is clearly my edge (a permaculture concept) where the greatest riches await.  I find that the greatest benefit comes from pursuing the poses or philosophies that we find most challenging.  I love triangle pose because my it comes naturally to me but when I work with balance and strength building poses like pinchamayarasana and handstand I notice a much greater effect in my body.  By the same token, when I choose to strive toward ahimsa - the yogic tenant of non-violence - I don't always want to see all the places where I think or act in ways that promote dissonance yet the effect of addressing those shadows is profound and immediate.
There are many aspects to the yogic path.  There is no shortage of work to be done or ways to do that work.  Let me support you in finding your edge and growing the vitality and grace in your life!

Bio

I was interested in yoga for years before I took the plunge and enrolled in a class in college.  My first yoga teacher was Mikki-Michele Siegel, an Iyengar yogi, at Cal State Fullerton in 1996.  It was overwhelming trying to learn all the sanskrit names and actions of each pose.  Regardless, I was hooked!
I've had the great fortune to work with Tatiana Urquiza in an introduction to Yogic Philosophy that helped her put all the pieces together.  The fact that Tatiana is also a gifted teacher of asana and an incredibly playful and spirited yoga teacher certainly helped!
After studying and practicing yoga for ten years, I chose to share this information with others and become a yoga teacher.  My first training was with Annie Carpenter through YogaWorks 200 hour teacher training.  What an amazing amount of information!  What an inspiring and rigorous teacher!
Since most of my practice was in Anusara studios, my next step was Immersion and Level I 150 hour Anusara teacher training with Noah Maize and Anthony Benaneti at City Yoga. Both of these men have practices that defy belief.  Watching Noah flip between forward and backbends through handstands is like watching Cirque de Soleil!
Having been firmly bitten by the yoga bug and inspired to become very well trained before venturing into the classroom I took a 300 hour professional program with Yoga Works.  Julie Kleinman was my mentor.  I worked with Jasmine Lieb and Lisa Walford.  All three are amazing women with very different approaches to their yoga .  It was an incredible experience.
My most recent foray into enhancing my teaching is through Jill Miller and her brilliant, anatomically focused Yoga Tune up work.  I completed the Level I teacher training and her core and shoulders immersion.  Hips immersion is next and I graduate to Level II teacher.  I feel incredibly blessed to have Jill as a mentor and a friend.  Her vision of wellness and fitness through playful exercised has transformed my practice and reinvigorated my teaching.  I can't wait to share it with you!
